Learning From Kids - Maps Edition
March 1, 2022
I love listening to conversations between kids as they wonder and work through things together. This huge wall map was recently hung in my school. And it has been fascinating to watch children and adults huddle around it looking for things, noticing things, curious.
Today, three students were taking it all in and noticing the new clocks that surround the perimeter indicating different times around the world. One wondered aloud, “Why do Los Angeles and New York have different times when they are in the same country?” They began talking together about time zones. Another student responded, “I know what time zone I’m in. We use Verizon time!”
And then, one student notices Russia on the map. She boldly states, “We don’t like Russia right now.” And another quickly responds, “We like them. It’s just that they are making really, really, really poor choices right now.” And then another shares how she does not believe everyone who lives in Russia agrees with what is happening.
These kids. They are listening and learning and working to make sense of the world around them. They are smart and funny and have so much to teach us.
