Amplifying Voices: A Passion Project
January 16, 2024
I often use quotes in my work and personal life. Grounding myself in the words of others brings reflection, clarity, and connection.
It is very apparent how the bite-sized quotes that can easily be found on the internet and promoted on social media often come from one group of people, so I will often intentionally seek quotes from individuals within underrepresented groups. To hear different perspectives, ideas, experiences, voices.
They can be very difficult to find.
And it makes sense. For hundreds of years, people in underrepresented groups didn’t have a voice so there is less of a collection.
Maya Angelou said, “If you don’t like something, change it.”
So let’s do that, shall we? I don’t know exactly how, but let’s start here….Every month, I will create a post. Please consider adding a quote (that can not already be found in a graphic on the Internet) in the comments that has been meaningful to you in something you heard or read by a person in an underrepresented group.
Here is what I am looking for specifically:
~ Quotes that are not already on an image on the internet or social media
~ Quotes from people in underrepresented groups (BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, persons with disabilities, women)
~ The quote and the author’s name
Then, we will take these beautiful words, put them on shareable images, and flood the Internet with them to put new voices out into the world!
If the words are not already public in a book or movie, please be sure to get consent from the person before putting it in the comments.
An example…a friend in an underrepresented group says something profound or meaningful to you. If they are agreeable, please drop it below!
I will collect these and figure out a way to share them on the Internet and social media. If anyone has any expertise in this area (graphics, SEO, etc.) and wants to partner with me on this little passion project, that would be fabulous!!
Consider this our first monthly collection. Let’s start today! Place any quotes you would like to share in the comments below.
Let’s amplify voices together!
