The Beauty in Beginning

August 5, 2023

While out-and-about recently, I have interacted with a number of people who are new to their jobs.

I know this because they have each told me. Unprompted. One welcomed me to the table, and told me it was their second day. One immediately told me they were new.

They have each been younger in life.

They are a bit timid. Unsure.

They are very helpful. Friendly.

And they are possibly starting out by saying they are new so people are kinder. So people show more grace.

There is a special beauty in being a beginner. I learned this from watching Emily Herrmann celebrating beginning band students.

If you are starting something new, trying something new, it makes sense to be unsure, uncertain.

And you will learn and grow over time.

There will most likely be people who are impatient, unkind.

And we don’t talk much about how hard learning and starting something new can be.

But we all have been there.

Please know there are many, many of us cheering you on!

You are doing great! Yay you!!

And, if you come across a beginner, have patience. Tell them how great they are doing as they learn. Leave a positive message. Tip them generously. Be kind.

“Every expert was once a beginner.”
