Sitting in Discomfort

July 30, 2023

I was driving by myself for a while tonight and had a lot on my mind.

I have some big dreams.

I have the why.

I do not have the what and the how and the where.

And I’ve been feeling really anxious and unsettled about it.

I don’t love those feelings.

I don’t like not having the answers.

I tried to listen to a book on tape and quickly realized I wasn’t paying any attention.

I considered blaring some T. Swift.

But ultimately, I decided it was important for me to sit with my feelings.

So I did.

Learning to lean into feelings that are often labeled as “bad” or “hard” can be difficult. We want them to go away as quickly as possible. We shove them down. We try to distract ourselves so we don’t have to feel it.

But feelings are not good or bad, right or wrong. They are morally neutral. They are all valid. And it is important to recognize and feel them.

And then we can use what we learn about ourselves in the process to figure out the next right thing.

So, after a long time of sitting in the discomfort, I did some reflecting and have a few possible ideas to consider.

The feelings are not completely gone, but I am embracing them, staying open, and excited to see where it all leads.
