Track People

April 28, 2022

Remember that thing we started yesterday about asking ourselves what is going well?

Here is mine today.

We have officially become “track people.”

When my child expressed the first sliver of interest in track, I asked my friend, Carrie, an expert on the topic, to tell me about track as I have approximately zero percent knowledge of what it even entails. Carrie told me that track was all about encouragement. And that’s all I needed to know.

Even though she was scared, my child bravely joined the team. Bless all sports and teams where there are no cuts and everyone is included.

She comes home from practice and shares about friendships she is making, how she has bonded with another student over their shared kindergarten experience where they both got pencil tips stuck under their skin. She is happy.

Today, I attended a match, game, scrimmage, whatever it’s called, for the first time to watch my child on the track and in the field. And got to connect with some friends I don’t see often enough.

Honestley, we don’t care how fast she runs or if she even runs at all. We don’t care if she is first or last. We just care that she is there. And today she bravely participated in two events.

After her events, there were relays happening around the track. And we watched as teammates moved in a wave on the inside of the track along with those running, cheering them on. They did this over and over and over. And it was simply beautiful.

When my child got in the car, she was smiling bigger than I’ve seen for a long time. And she said, “It’s the first school thing that I feel like I’m a part of something…I love it.”

That is what is going well over here.

What is going well for you today?
