Showing Up
November 11, 2023
A few weeks ago in our book club, we were asked to write out the names of people who nurture us. To look for traits and themes in these relationships.
One that stood out so clearly for me was how each of the people on my list show up. They show up for the good and they really show up well for the hard.
It’s really important to me.
I knew one would be my closest friend when she just knew I had taken on more than I should have (shocking, I know) and she literally showed up at my door one night and stayed into the early hours working alongside me. She is an expert level show-er-upper.
There’s no one right way to do it. And it can be uncomfortable. To help us all be a little better at it, here is what I have learned from these people in my life…
They check in. They listen. They validate. They hold space. They encourage. They love. They let me be me.
They don’t fix. They don’t solve. They don’t have expectations. They don’t push. They don’t have judgement.
And I try to do the same for them.
I am not perfect, but I try to show up in some way whenever and however I can.
Let’s all do this for our people. Send the text. Make the call. Sit with them. Give the hug. Listen. Spend the time.
Just show up.
