Creating Community

August 11, 2023

Early this morning, I stopped in to the East Ave. Wegmans. I don’t go there often as it’s not super close to where I live, but I had an appointment and went to grab a limited item.

I asked where to find it at the Service Desk and was directed to a person restocking the item near the checkout lanes.

We chatted for a few moments while I shopped.

Her laughter filled the front end. Her joyful mess was contagious. Her kindness game was strong.

And what I started to notice was how many people intentionally walked by her and said good morning to her, along with calling her by name.

“Good morning, Karen!”

It was clear she had developed relationships with the customers and her co-workers. They knew she cared about them. And they made it a point to greet her as they went through the store.

In those few brief moments, Karen made me feel like I was part of something. She made me feel welcome, like I belonged.

These interactions matter. No matter how big or how small.

Thank you, Karen, for reminding me of this today.
